Title: Troubleshooting 7 Common Extrusion Defects: Using Purging & Best Practices to Cut Scrap

Description:

This presentation will introduce 7 of the most common extrusion defects, address their possible causes, and provide concrete solutions to get attendees running defect-free.

Type: General Session

Abstract:

Unlike Injection Molding, Extrusion is a “Black Box” process and many defects originate from causes you cannot readily see. This talk will briefly discuss the 3 main categories of issues (aesthetic flaws, flow shifts, & size variance). In this session, Purging Expert Jarred Packard will introduce 7 of the most common defects and processing issues extruders face.  He will then examine possible causes and the best solutions to reduce scrap and get you back running defect-free. Some of the solutions focus on processing best practices, and several focus on ways proper purging can eliminate problems and dramatically reduce costs. Packard's tips will address issues in profile, sheet, wire, film, compounding, and other general types of extrusion.
